That's right, bad rips will go unfixed. Use your credits.

Well, f**k me sideways. You could smell something coming. Thank goodness for their Sony drop - at least blowing the remaining credit won't take forever.
  • "We believe we've found a great home for AmieStreet.com"

    Which home is that? Oblivion?
  • Bad news for CrRzBk, as for all of us. Not that there was all that much shaking at Amie these days anyway, now we know why.

I have no remaining credit over there, but I do have 25 pages of un-DL'd songs!
  • Certainly the eMuser regulars called this. I was feverishly cashing rec's all weekend, still have alot to go. As a parting gift, they need to give me credit for all those free tracks I rec'ed accidentally.

The ones I feel really sorry for is Crimson Razorback and Prose in Rosette. They are back on the streets again.
  • News linky
Furthemore, Amie Street is giving its users a $5 promotional code which they can spend at Amazon's MP3 store.

So, they think they can buy us off with free DLs!? Oh, all right, I'll take 'em...don't count your chickens, etc.

Songza sounds, um, pretty much like Pandora...
  • Crap. Oh, well, I guess I've got some RECs to cash and some credit to spend.
  • >I guess I've got some RECs to cash and some credit to spend.

I have more than two hundred unused recs. I am thinking of rec'ing every free track on the site, hoping they go up to 9 cents, maybe 13 cents, then cashing them right out. I will say that the cashing page is loading slower than ever, since we are all trying to get all the money we can out of the system before it closes.
  • I'm getting the cashing out page ok, I just can't buy anything.
  • Hmm. They better give us some time before closing up shop. I was in the middle of trying to clear out my SFL on there and still have probably 70 bucks worth of credit.

Alright, I see we have until 9/22. All good things...
  • Down for maintenance. Some things never change.
  • I'm surprised at just how quickly this news has spread. Sometimes it seems like no one outside of us noticed when Amie Street went down. Now this announcement comes, there's dozens (if not hundreds) of Tweets and the site is brought to its, albeit weak, knees.

As long as everything in my SFL doesn't mysteriously double in price, I'm fine. Don't get me wrong, I'm pissed that they're closing, but no matter how much I tried to fool myself it was becoming more and more obvious that Amie Street was not long for this world.
  • Sigh. It was good while it lasted.

    Any good obscure recs?

    Craig
  • I certainly hope they don't buttsex it without lube by cutting us off immediately. I've still got over $100 in REC money to use, and haven't downloaded any of my purchases for the last 2-3 weeks.
  • >Any good obscure recs?

There were last I checked a lot of very reasonable albums on Hightone - older Dave Alvin, etc., and on Favored Nations - Steve Vai & other guitar tweedlers.
  • I think I'm going to plow through labels like Mosz and kranky once it comes back up. There's still 2 500+ rec threads (the older one is here) that might be useful for people.

I'll be honest, if they still take payments I'll be tempted to buy more credits so that I can clear as many albums as possible this month.
  • Stocking up on Fela might be the order the day: even at full price, it won't be cheaper elsewhere.
  • Thanks BIgD, thom, and Bad Thoughts. I'll take a look at those labels/Fela if I can ever access the site again.

I'll only have about $30 to work with though, so I'll need to be more selective than say, froggie.

    Craig
  • I posted a link to this when it first dropped on AmieStreet.... if one doesn't have any Fela I think this is a compilation/consolidation of quite a bit of his stuff in one tidy package.

I can't actually link to it right now but I think it was only running $8.50 or so for 27 tracks.
  • I'll second Fela, or third it. I am going to finish out Burning Spear, maybe a few other reggae things. I was thinking that I might get a bunch of Sony since none of this is real money, and Sony is likely not to see a dime of it.
  • Figures it is down. I should have burned all my credits this weekend while I was at it. :-/
  • I wonder how much prices for certain albums at AmieStreet are going to rise as a result of the sudden flux of activity with everyone trying to spend down their account balances and cash out recs all at once. I'm thinking/hoping that some of my languishing recs for things that previous topped out at 50-60 might get a small boost. Problem is the higher they go means that the higher albums across the spectrum are likely going and therefore reducing the overall purchasing power of my rec $ that I haven't cashed out yet.

Oh well... it was great while it lasted. My eMu sub is up in November and I was seriously thinking about canceling it and just relying on AmieStreet to continue getting some new stuff as I shift my focus from acquiring to listening. Looks like I'll have a huge amount of acquiring to do over the next two weeks and have to keep my eMu account active after all.
  • I managed to cash in my remaining rec's this morning before the site crashed; still have 10 unused rec's left. my biggest problem is that I have literally thousands of "purchased" but undownloaded songs; so much that I probably don't even have space for it all. oh well, at least they were all free.

I have to admit that I'm actually a little bit relieved it's closing - the burden of listening to that ever growing pile of free stuff that I was addicted to was becoming a bit much.

condolences to selfrisin' and Kenny though, who seemed to enjoy the site more than most others. frogkopf too I guess, but probably you can enjoy it just as much dead as allive - just donate money to your favorite charity and pretend you've got more music that you won't listen too.

I'm not sure I understand why Amazon would purchase it just to shut it down. If it's profitable, keep running it, and if it's not why buy it instead of just waiting it out?
  • It will make for interesting speculation as to why Amazon bought Amie Street. The technology wasn't overall interesting and was particularly brittle; maybe the elastic pricing model, but that shouldn't be hard for Amazon to develop. Possibly it was a talent acquisition, they had been posting piles of job openings all summer for the MP3 store. Hmmm...
  • Lala folds into iTunes.
    Amie Street folds into Amazon.
Limewire is teetering on the brink.
7digital deals come only once in a while.

Last year's eMusic debacle actually isn't so bad now. At least eMu is still expanding.
  • No doubt, Bad Thoughts. Our cheap music options are dwindling. Especially once Guvera goes the way of the others.

  • The greatest loss will be street cred rankings.

Now we don't know who to fear

Meanwhile, at mtraks, they're all like, Helloo? Waitin' to get acquired ovah heah.

I actually did an mtraks trial, got several good Jazz things on Timeless.
Now we don't know who to fear

When in doubt, fear the frog.
  • Some more background, sounding like an extinguish acquisition.
  • @Bad Thoughts - 7digital has actually expanded their deals lately. They now do 5 new $5 albums each week - and they're new albums, unlike Amazon which often discounts a lot of back catalog items (not a complaint). Granted, they haven't had their huge $4 or $2 sales since last year, but I think those were all during the Christmas season anyway. I could be wrong, but I feel like 7digital has been expanding their service this year. However I wouldn't be surprised if LimeWire closed up shop anytime soon.

@Craig - I thought I was the resident Guvera pessimist these days.

@Doofy - totally forgot about mtracks.
  • And personally, I hope what Bandcamp is doing is the real future of the music industry.
